The Cary Council’s Kickoff event on February 27, 2024, was an inspiring sneak peek at the bold vision of UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Health. Their recently announced $5 billion pediatric campus is an immense undertaking and will reshape how medical experts care for our most vulnerable patients. Members and guests of The Cary Council were provided a glimpse of what the future of pediatric care will look like in North Texas from two prominent physician leaders.

A Passion for Pediatric Care

The highlight of the night was the passion conveyed by two physicians helping to lead this pediatric project: Lina Chalak, M.D., and Jorge Bezerra, M.D. Their talks centered around the groundbreaking initiative by UT Southwestern and Children’s Health to establish a joint pediatric campus in Dallas. With their expertise and passion, they shed light on the transformative impact this venture promises for pediatric health care in our region and how community support is a vital component.

Dr. Bezerra began the night by quoting Southwestern Medical Foundation’s founder, Edward H. Cary, M.D., saying, “I’ve heard this ‘inspire a great citizenship to greater deeds, 1939.’ If you think about it, we are living in that future and now join us in designing the new future.”

Dr. Chalak’s enthusiasm for caring for the children of our region – especially the NICU babies – emanated out of her as she expressed, “How much joy and excitement to be able to plan that future together. I’m a neonatal intensivist, and I’m the chief of neonatology, which means I have the best job in the universe just helping babies have the best head start possible and have the best future possible.”
