On February 25, 2025, The Cary Council gathered for its annual Kickoff Programming Event, setting the stage for another impactful year of supporting early-stage medical research and advancing health care innovation in North Texas. Held at UT Southwestern Medical Center, the evening celebrated the Council’s 10th anniversary with a decade of achievements, welcomed new members, and provided hands-on CPR training.

Reflecting on a Decade of Impact

Jonathan Dietz, in his inaugural address as Chair of The Cary Council, opened the evening by recognizing the Council’s remarkable milestone: ten years of supporting early-career researchers through its signature $50,000 seed grants. Since its founding in 2015 by Michael Kahn, The Cary Council has awarded 21 of these grants, leading to over $21 million in follow-on funding for groundbreaking research at UT Southwestern.

A special moment in the program honored outgoing Chair Josie Sewell for her years of dedication and leadership. Michael Kahn shared a touching story about how Sewell, a nurse practitioner, played a pivotal role in his family’s cancer journey, an experience that inspired him to launch The Cary Council with other like-minded community leaders. Sewell was recognized for her service as Past Chair, followed by a video of her own health journey with her son, Connor, an experience that reinforced her family’s commitment to supporting medical advancement at UT Southwestern and Children’s Health.

A Focus on Lifesaving Education

The event also featured an engaging program led by two featured guests: Anezi Uzendu, M.D., FACC, and Jordan Ezekian, M.D. Their presentation, Prepared to Save: Advancing CPR Training for All, highlighted the importance of widespread CPR education and accessibility. Attendees then participated in hands-on CPR training, equipping them with essential lifesaving skills.
