Can military suicide be avoided with a better transition into civilian life? That is the question Julie Hersh explores in her article appearing in Psychology Today, An Ounce of Engagement: The Key to Reducing Military Suicide.
Julie Hersh, a writer, leading mental health advocate and Southwestern Medical Foundation board member, has battled her own depression, surviving three major depressive episodes and three suicide attempts. She is the author of Struck by Living: From Depression to Hope, a book chronicling how depression affected her life and family and the steps she took to manage the disease.
In her most recent writing on better understanding depression, Mrs. Hersh talks to Andy Nguyen, the founder of Honor Courage Commitment (HCC), an organization assisting veterans once they leave the service and the importance of preserving mental health before any glimpse of mental illness can occur.
